Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Tennessee state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a resident of the state of Tennessee
  • Be competent, trustworthy, financially responsible, and have a good business reputation
  • Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see Prelicense requirements below)
  • Pass a written examination and file a license application
  • Submit a set of fingerprints

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete Prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

  • 20-hours Tennessee Life Insurance
  • 20-hours Tennessee Accident and Health Insurance
  • 40-hours Tennessee life, Accident and Health Insurance
  • 20-hours Tennessee Property Insurance
  • 20-hours Tennessee Casualty Insurance
  • 40-hours Tennessee Property and Casualty Insurance

State Candidate Handbook

Before making an exam reservation Applicants should thoroughly review the State of Tennessee Insurance Candidate Handbook which contains the exam content outlines and important information regarding eligibility and the examination and licensing application process.

PLE Course Delivery

Per Tennessee PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.

PLE Course Exam

  • Passing Score: Applicants must pass the PLE final exam with a 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.
  • Exam Proctor Requirements:  The PLE final exam does not require a proctor.

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Tennessee.  An applicant must meet Tennessee’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.  You must take your certificate of completion with you to the exam site on the day of your examination.  Certificates of completion are valid for 6 months from the completion date.

State Reporting Requirements 

Currently, Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance does not require PLE course completions to be reported to the state.


Resident License application process

1.     Complete a Tennessee insurance prelicensing course

Once you have completed your Tennessee insurance prelicensing course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.

2.     Register for the State exam:


Make a reservation for the exam by going online at www.pearsonvue.com/tn/insurance or by calling (800) 274-4957.

 Materials needed to bring:

  • 2 forms of current Identification that contains a photograph and signature. ( ID cannot be expired)
  • A copy of your prelicensing Certificate of Completion. You will not be allowed to take the test without it.

Exam Format:

  •  The passing score required on the exam is 70.
  • You receive a Pass and Fail as soon as the exam is complete.

3.     Fingerprinting Process

Resident applicants are required to submit fingerprints through L-1 Enrollment Services for a background check.

4. Apply for a license application

Apply for your Tennessee insurance license by completing an application at www.nipr.com.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state may not be required to complete prelicense education or take an examination as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • Currently licensed in former home state and make application to Tennessee within 90 days of cancellation of former home state license
  • Left previous home state in good standing

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Tennessee, producers must complete an initial 8-hour training course.
