Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident North Dakota insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Maintain principal place of residency or business in North Dakota
  • Be trustworthy, competent, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation
  • Pass the license examination
  • File a license application and remit filing fees
  • At the date of application, have had no insurance license revoked or suspended that was issued to you in any state or Canadian province

Exam Requirements

  • Passing Score: PreLicense.com suggests students pass PreLicense.com's Practice exam with a score of 75% or higher.
  • Exam Proctor Requirements: The Practice exam does not require a proctor.
  • Certificate of Completion
    The North Dakota Insurance Department does not require a PLE certificate of completion.

State Reporting Requirements

The North Dakota Insurance Department does not require PLE course completions to be reported.


License Application Process:

1.  Register for State exam: register for your examinations online by accessing PSI’s registration Web site at https://candidate.psiexams.com/ssl_login.jsp or by calling PSI at (800) 733-9267.

Materials Needed at Exam Site

  • Candidates must present two (2) forms of current signature identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. Identification must be in English.
  • Candidates who have changed their names must provide written documentation of the change. Examples include a copy of a marriage license, divorce decree or other official document.

Exam Format:

  • When candidates complete the examination, they will receive a score report marked “pass” or “fail” along with diagnostic information.
  • Total score of 70% is required to pass.


2.   Fingerprinting Process

PSI’s North Dakota test centers provide LiveScan fingerprinting services. PSI collects your fingerprints digitally using an optical scanner. You may be fingerprinted at one of PSI test centers, during regular testing hours, on the day of your examination. Upon completion of the fingerprinting, PSI will mail the signed consent form, fingerprint card, and BCI payment ($42.75) directly to the North Dakota Insurance Department.


3.Apply for your License: To apply for a North Dakota resident insurance producer license, complete the NAIC Uniform Application form electronically at www.nipr.com. The fee is $100.


New Resident Producer Requirements

If you are moving to North Dakota and wish to qualify for a North Dakota license without taking an examination, you must have held the same or a similar insurance license in your previous state in the last 90 days.

An applicant for a North Dakota resident license cannot hold an active resident license in another state. If you hold an active non-resident license in North Dakota, a paper application should be submitted and no fee is required.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Non-residents may apply by reciprocity and are exempt from the examination requirement if the following requirements are met:

  • Hold a resident license that is active and in good standing in your home state
  • Comply with continuing education requirements in your home state
  • File a license application with the Department that designates the
  •  Commissioner as your true and lawful attorney for purposes of service of process

Fingerprinting Process

There are no fingerprint requirements in North Dakota.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in North Dakota, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course.

Annuity Training: All producers  currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products.
