Illinois PreLicensing Requirements 

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Illinois state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a resident of the state of Illinois
  • Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see prelicense requirements below)
  • Pass a written examination and file a license application

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

  • 20-hours Illinois Life Insurance
  • 20-hours Illinois Accident and Health Insurance
  • 20-hours Illinois Property Insurance
  • 20-hours Illinois Casualty Insurance

Note:  Of the 20-hour requirement, 7.5 hours must be conducted in a live classroom setting and the remaining 12.5 hours may be conducted through self-study as part of the classroom-based program.

PLE Self-Study Course Delivery

Of the 20-hour requirement, 7.5 hours must be conducted in a live classroom setting and the remaining 12.5 hours may be conducted through self-study as part of the classroom-based program.

PreLicense.com has prepared an internet-based course that is designed only for the self-study portion of the IL DOI’s prelicense education requirement. The online self-study course will only be provided to license candidates who enroll in an Illinois DOI-approved school that uses the PreLicense.com course as part of its curriculum.

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the Illinois course (including the 7.5 hours of classroom instruction), your classroom instructor will present you with your Certificate of Completion. PreLicense.com cannot issue a Certificate of Completion for completing this online course alone.

State Reporting Requirements 

Illinois requires course completion reporting by the Illinois DOI-approved provider within 10 days following the end of the week in which the course was completed.

Materials Needed to Present at Exam Site

  • Candidates must present two (2) forms of current signature identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. Identification must be in English.
  • PLE Certificate of Completion
  • Failing score report (if retaking an exam)

  • Exams and Fees:  A list of insurance license exams and fees can be found on the back cover of the State of Illinois Insurance Candidate Handbook.  Currently, the exam fee is $103.00.

State Exam Passing Score

  • Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.
  • Candidates who pass one section of the exam and fail the other need retake only the failed section within 90 days.  If the entire exam has not been passed after 90 days, candidates must retake the entire exam.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state may not be required to complete prelicense education or take an examination as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • Application is received within 90 days after cancellation of previous home state license
  • Applicant was in good standing in previous home state at time of cancellation

    Nonresident Producer Requirements

    Nonresident license candidates may obtain an Illinois producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.

    State-Required Product Training

    Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

    Annuity Training: All producers currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products.

    Long-Term Care: Before soliciting or selling LTCI products in Illinois, resident producers must complete an 8-hour LTC training course.

Additional fees for state filing, books or shipping may apply at the time you register to begin taking the product training course.
